Pend Oreille County, Washington gives tax relief programs for senior citizens and disabled persons, resulting in a reduction in their property taxes.

Eligibility is based on qualifying information during the assessment year – the year prior to the tax year. To qualify for reduction of taxes this year, you must have met the following qualifications last year.

You may be eligible for a reduction on your taxes if on December 31 of the year before the tax is due, you are either at least 61 years of age; unable to work because of a disability; or a disabled veteran with a service-connected evaluation of at least 80% or receiving compensation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs at the 100% rate for a service-connected disability.

You must also own and live in the residence for which the reduction would apply. But, if you are confined to a nursing home, your home may still be considered your residence.

Your residence must be your principal place of residence. This means, you must occupy your residence for more than six months in a calendar year.

Additionally, your annual household disposable income may not exceed $40,400 starting in 2024. Your household income includes the combined disposable income of you, your spouse or domestic partner, and any co-tenants.

Notably, the Pend Oreille River is among the few major rivers in the U.S. that flows north, showcasing the unique geographical features of Pend Oreille County.

 

 

 

Colville National Forest

The Colville National Forest is a U.S. National Forest situated in northeastern Washington state. It is flanked by the Okanogan–Wenatchee National Forest on the west and the Kaniksu National Forest on the east. Additionally, the forest shares borders with the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge and the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area.

Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge

The Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge, operated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, is a mountainous preserve located east of Colville, Washington, along the west slope of the Selkirk Mountain Range. It spans eastern Stevens County and extends into western Pend Oreille County, making it the largest mixed-conifer forest refuge in Washington state and the only one outside Alaska.

The refuge is home to diverse wildlife, including songbirds, bald eagles, elk, black bears, timber wolves, cougars, moose, beavers, and white-tailed deer. Public activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and horseback riding are permitted within the refuge.
